Equestrian team places fourth in Big 12 Championships

    The TCU equestrian team closed out the 2013 Big 12 Championships overall, but earned several individual athlete conference honors Saturday afternoon in Stillwater, Okla.

    Sophomore Demi Stiegler was named Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Year after compiling an 11-1-2 overall season record. Stiegler went 5-1 in conference play during the regular season.

    “I’m so incredibly excited for Demi Stiegler,” Hunt Seat head coach Logan Fiorentino said. “The Big 12 has a lot of talent, so it’s a huge accomplishment for her to be honored with that award.”

    Senior Alexie Estrada also earned honors as Co-Horsemanship Rider of the Year with her 8-4-2 overall mark, alongside Oklahoma State’s Katy Krshka. Estrada also went 5-1-1 in league play on the season.

    Overall, the team fell to No. 4 seeded Kansas State in the first round of competition Friday afternoon, dropping a 10-5 decision.

    The Hunt Seat team swept the Wildcats in Equitation on the Flat 3-0, but fell 8-0 in the Western team.

    The Horned Frogs took on Baylor Saturday afternoon to determine the third and fourth place rankings, but fell 8-7 overall.

    The Western team tied the Bears 4-4, but dropped to 10-4 on the season by falling in the overall raw score. The Hunt Seat team moved to 9-5 on the year with a 4-3 decision over Baylor.

    Also included in All-Big 12 recognition Saturday after the tournament were senior Kolby Simonson and sophomore Alexi Child in reining, and senior Haley Jacobi as a Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

    The Horned Frogs carry an 8-7 overall record into their next event at the 2013 NCEA Championships April 18-20 in Waco.
