TCU baseball falls to Kansas State, 6-1

Kansas State (30-13, 7-5 Big 12) had a three-run sixth inning to give TCU a 6-1 loss in the Horned Frogs’ first ever baseball game in Manhattan, Kan., Friday.

With two runners on, K-State’s Jared King hit a bases-clearing double that took the Wildcats’ 1-0 lead to 3-0. A throwing error from TCU’s second baseman Paul Hendrix allowed another run to score, making the game 4-0 in favor of Kansas State.

TCU (19-22, 7-9 Big 12) didn’t score a run until the eighth inning. In the inning, Cody Jones led off the inning with a triple to left field. A walk to Boomer White brought up Hendrix, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring around TCU’s only run of the game.

Kansas State responded back quickly though, as the Wildcats scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Jared King drove in his third run of the game, then came around to score on a second throwing error from TCU’s Hendrix, bringing the game to its final 6-1 score.

TCU starter Preston Morrison (6-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits during his 5.2 innings. He walked one and struck out two.

The last time Morrison allowed three earned runs in a game was June 4, 2012, against Ole Miss in the College Station regional, and the last time he allowed four runs was May 25, 2012, against New Mexico.

K-State’s starter MaVorhis (4-0) did not allow any runs on eight hits. He walked one batter and struck out one in his 5.1 innings.

The loss brings TCU to a 19-22 overall record and a 7-9 record in Big 12 Conference play.

Sophomore lefty Brandon Finnegan will get the start for TCU in game two, which starts Saturday at 4 p.m. at Tointon Family Stadium.
