Baseball student-athletes play their way to academic success

Eight student-athletes of the Horned Frog baseball team were named as Academic All Big-12 performers, announced by the league on Thursday.

The first team honorees, Kyle Bacak, Kevin Cron, Josh Gonzales, Andrew Mitchell, Preston Morrison and Jantzen Witte, earned GPAs of 3.2 or better and participated in at least 60% of the team’s games.

Senior third baseman Witte was happy to be named to the Academic All Big-12 Baseball team.

“I definitely work hard in the classroom," he said. “It feels good to be selected.”

Senior pinch hitter Josh Gonzales was proud of his achievement.

“Oh, that’s awesome. Being a student athlete is kind of a full time job, so doing that and keeping up with my academics is kind of amazing,” he said. “It makes me feel good, like all my hard work has paid off.”

Second-team honorees were also selected to the 2013 Academic All Big-12 team. Junior right fielders Dylan Fitzgerald and Brett Johnson both earned GPAs of 3.0 to 3.19.
