Recent TCU graduate and aspiring artist Alex Matthews has turned her passion for art into her own business with the creation of AEM Designs.
An art lover for most of her life, Matthews decided in January that she would take a chance at putting her artwork up for sale to the public.
Matthews graduated from TCU in December of 2012 with a degree in strategic communication and a minor in art. A native of Stockton, Calif., Matthews chose to stay in the Metroplex to start her business.
Matthews said she takes her inspiration from the world around her, with a style that focuses on the principle of simplicity while leaning towards the abstract. One of her most popular series so far is her collection of typographic states.
“I never would have thought I would make a bunch of state frames. I was only planning on doing two, California and Texas,” Matthews said.
Matthews said she had been giving her original artworks to close friends and family as gifts for years, but with a new business in the making, she had to set hard prices.
“The hardest part was actually putting a price on my work. It was something I had never done before,” Matthews said.
Matthews said her prints typically run around $25 or $30, and originals can be anywhere from $50 to $200.
Over the past few months, Matthews has adapted her artworks to fit the needs of every client. She has taken requests for custom artworks to wedding invitations and everything in between.
“I’m happiest when I’m creating art, and I hope one day to be able to turn it into a full time job,” Matthews said.
