TCU rifle team member nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year Award

Recent TCU graduate and former rifle team member Sarah Beard has been nominated for the NCAA 2013 Woman of the Year Award.

The award is given every year to "graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership," according to the NCAA's website.

A total of 455 female student-athletes from across the country were nominated for the award. Beard was one of only three rifle shooters to be nominated.

The top nine finalists will be announced in September, and the winner of the award will be announced in Indianapolis on Oct. 20.

Beard, who was part of a rifle team that went undefeated in the 2012-2013 regular season and won two national championships in four years, said that she was "pretty surprised" when she heard the news.

"I definitely wasn't expecting it," Beard said. "I feel honored that they nominated me."

Beard is currently coaching a high school shooting team in Colorado Springs, Colo., and hopes to make the 2016 Olympic rifle team.

"There's a training camp down in Rio in September that I'll be going to, and then I'll move back [to Colorado] to train for the Olympics," Beard said.

In Beard's final season at TCU, she was named first-team All-American in both smallbore and air rifle and was one of six rifle team members to compete in every match during the season.
