TCU sweeps home tournament

    The TCU women's volleyball team defended its home court over the weekend and topped all four teams competing in the Nike/Molten Invitational.

    The Frogs (8-3, 0-0 Big 12) started the weekend tournament Friday with a 12 p.m. match against Stephen F. Austin. The Frogs topped the Ladyjacks (8-4, 0-0 Southland) in four sets (25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16).

    The team continued its winning ways into the evening match against Houston (7-4, 0-0 American), beating the Cougars in four sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18).

    On Saturday, the women's volleyball team topped Grambling State (2-10, 1-0 SWAC) in straight sets (25-12, 25-14, 25-17).

    Sophomore Sutton Sunstrum, who usually plays at defensive specialist, entered the game as an outside hitter and finished with a season-high of 12 kills, a career-high six aces, seven digs and one block.

    The Frogs started the match strong, taking advantage of Grambling State hitting and serve receive errors, earning six aces early and taking the first set 25-12.

    Grambling State fought back in the second set, playing point-for-point with seven different tie scores. After a kill from sophomore outside hitter Macy Capen at 12-12, though, TCU went on a 13-2 run and won the second set 25-14.

    The Frogs kept running away with the match in the third set with an early four-point lead. Grambling State clawed its way back into the match, but Sunstrum served three of her six service aces to finish out the set and complete the 3-0 sweep.

    Freshman middle blocker Natalie Gower tallied a team-high three blocks and a career-high seven kills in the match. Redshirt freshman setter Trisha Langley added eight digs and a career-high 18 assists.

    For Grambling State, senior right-side hitter Tiara McIver led the team with 7 kills and senior outside hitter Asia Drenon finished in a close second with 5 kills. Senior setter Breonna Loud tallied nine assists in the match and junior libero Chantel McGill recorded nine digs.

    The Horned Frogs finished out the home tournament Saturday night with a five-set win (25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-9) over Ole Miss (7-3, 0-0 Southeastern).

    Senior middle blocker Yvonne Igodan finished the match with 20 kills and only one error for a .704 hitting percentage. Junior right-side hitter Stephanie Holland finished second in kills with 14. Junior middle blocker Mattie Burleson recorded nine assisted blocks.

    Sophomore setter Alexia Heist chipped in 32 assists and a team-high 12 digs and Langley contributed 20 assists and seven digs. Freshman libero Shane Peters recorded 11 digs and one of the two service aces in the match.

    For Ole Miss, sophomore middle blocker Ty Laporte led the team with 13 kills. Freshman setter Aubrey Edie added 40 assists and freshman libero Kristen Brashear recorded 22 digs and led the team with three of the eight service aces.

    Igodan and Holland earned Co-MVP honors at the tournament, and Smith was named to the All-Tournament team. Igodan finished with 47 kills and 12 blocks. Holland recorded 34 kills and 12 blocks as well, while Smith tallied 31 kills and 15 digs. 

    Up next for the Frogs, the team will travel to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the Spartan Spiketacular at UNC Greensboro Sept. 20-21.

    The Frogs will face North Carolina Central Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday's matches against George Mason and UNC Greensboro are set to start at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
