Poet to speak at program

A former poet laureate of Texas will be the featured speaker on Thursday at the Creative Writing Awards Program.

Walt McDonald will read selections from his poetry and might comment on the state of contemporary poetry, said David Kuhne, associate director of the William L. Adams Writing Center.

“We are very excited and pleased to get a poet of such renown to visit our campus,” Kuhne said. “McDonald, who has published more than 20 books, continues our tradition of presenting outstanding writers to the TCU audience.”

In addition to McDonald, the program will also center around writing contests. More than $3,000 will be awarded for student poetry, fiction and essays.

“Some awards from the event have been given since 1935, so the awards historically are very important to the department,” said Charlotte Hogg, an assistant professor in the English department. “It’s a chance for the good writing professors to see from students to be recognized and celebrated.”

Selected winning entries will be published in the annual Creative Writing Awards Publication, Kuhne said.

“We hope that people bring away an understanding of the quality and variety of writing that goes on every year at TCU,” Kuhne said. “We also hope the audience will take away a greater understanding of professional writing in its various genres.”

McDonald will speak at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Dee J. Kelly Alumni and Visitors Center. There is no cost of admission for the program. Select books will be on sale afterward for McDonald to sign.
