The TCU equestrian team won their first event of the spring season 7-1 over the Delaware State University Hornets on Friday at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo in the John Justin Arena.
TCU went 3-0 in reining, with Shelby St. Hilaire earning a season high score of 74.5 on the horse Flash 2.
There were two ties in the event. Both TCU’s Chantz Stewart and DSU’s Tayler Scuse competed on Shy and tied with a 72, while TCU’s Katie Gray and DSU’s Abigail Buckwalter also tied with a score of 69 on Sassy after the judge called for a re-ride.
“The re-ride happened tonight because the judge saw a horse that was a little bit difficult to ride and he felt he could evaluate the riders better on a different animal,” said TCU Director of Equestrian Haley Schoolfield.
The score for horsemanship was 4-1 for TCU. TCU had the top scorer in this event with Calli Rouse’s 75.5 on Matt. Megan McMullen also made a high score for TCU with a 73 on Midnight.
“The team really rose to the level we were hoping for,” Schoolfield said. “We had some strong rides from our young group and seniors alike. So we are really excited with the start we are off to this semester.”
The Frogs will compete against Delaware State again Sunday at 10 a.m. in Springtown, Texas.
