No. 35 TCU was unable to have individual success in solo matches against No. 28 University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Sunday.

The Tar Heels were seeking retribution after falling to TCU last season. The Horned Frogs won the doubles point to start the match but could not get any momentum by way of singles competition. UNC took four of the six total singles matches, propelling them to tight 4-3 victory.

The No. 11 ranked doubles team in the country Nick Chappell and Will Stein earned the doubles point after a 6-2 win over Tar Heels Brett Clark and Brayden Schnur.

North Carolina grabbed a win on court three, but Arnau Dachs and Trey Daniel clinched a second doubles point for the Frogs 6-5 (7-3) in a tiebreaker match against North Carolina’s Esben Hess-Olesen and Nelson Vick.

In singles play, however, the Frogs struggled with consistency and were unable to get crucial match points.

The first match of the day featured an upset of No. 84 Chappell by UNC’s Schnur 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, which set the tone for the matches to come. In the second matchup, North Carolina’s No. 17 ranked Ronnie Schneider defeated Dachs 6-4, 6-4.

The third match featured two ranked players as No. 36 Clark of UNC defeated No. 118 Facundo Lugones 6-5 (7-0), 6-2.

TCU tried to claw its way back with wins in the fourth and fifth matches coming from Rodolfo Bustamante and Daniel. But they were unable to close the deal in the final singles match of the day, with Andres Alfonzo falling to Vick 6-4, 6-2.

TCU will look to rebound when they play against UT Arlington on Feb. 16 at noon.
