Two games into his seventh season, SMU head football coach June Jones resigned Monday afternoon, citing personal issues, according to a statement from SMU.
Defensive Coordinator Tom Mason will take over as interim head coach.
The Mustangs fell hard in their first two games. They opened with a 45-0 loss to Baylor and followed with 43-6 loss to North Texas.
TCU will play the Mustangs on Sept. 27 in Dallas.
TCU head coach Gary Patterson could not be reached for comment. Patterson and Jones have had a complicated history since Patterson’s 2011 press conference addressing Jones’ criticisms regarding TCU’s consistent playing style. Patterson also complained that SMU players were taunting TCU players.
Jones found himself in sports news this past summer when he said to WDAE-AM, “I think the have-nots [non-Power Five leagues] should go ahead and move to the spring just like the USFL did.” SMU competes in the American Athletic Conference, which is not considered a Power Five conference.
Jones, with a SMU career record of 36-43, signed a contract through 2017 in December.
