Volleyball defeats Baylor 3-1 Saturday

The TCU volleyball team notched double-digit blocks for the fourth straight match in a 3-1 victory over Baylor in the University Recreation Center Saturday.

The Frogs (12-6, 2-2 Big 12) took the last three sets of the match (25-22, 25-14, 25-18) after surrendering an 8-point lead in the first set (24-26).

TCU recorded 12 blocks against Baylor (10-7, 1-2 Big 12), seven of which came from senior Mattie Burleson. TCU holds the top two spots in blocking in the Big 12.

Sophomores Sarita Mikals and Ashley Smith both chipped in to the win with double-doubles. Mikals recorded 12 kills and 10 digs, while Smith picked up 11 of each.

Junior Alexia Heist racked up a team-high 22 assists and nine digs.

TCU led Baylor 10-2 in the first set but couldn’t hold onto the lead after a Baylor timeout. With the score 24-22 and at set point for the Frogs, the Bears rallied for four straight points and took the set.

The Frogs nearly let a 14-4 lead slip away in the second set, but they managed to hold on and win the set 25-22 after a service error.

The second half wasn’t so close. The Frogs notched a .421 hitting percentage in the third set, and an ace from RS sophomore Trisha Langley closed out the set 25-14.

In the middle of the fourth set, Baylor took its first lead since the first set 10-9. The Frogs didn’t let the lead last long, and junior Blaire Pickens and Mikals sealed the match with two straight kills to close out the set.

The Frogs will travel to face West Virginia next Saturday to continue conference play. The match is set to start at 3 p.m. CT.
