Rees-Jones Hall will be open 24 hours beginning Dec. 10 in order to accommodate students as they study for finals.

The 24-hour schedule will end on Dec. 19.

These extended hours are due to the limited space in the Mary Coutts Burnett Library, since it is currently under renovation.

“Unfortunately, since we don’t have any space to expand into, we really don’t have any additional options,” said Tracy Hull, associate dean of the library. “I was really happy to see that Rees-Jones was able to find additional staffing.”

The library will also add extra hours starting Dec. 12. Instead of closing at 8 p.m. on Friday, the library will be open to students until 2 a.m.

Additionally, the weekend before final exams on Dec. 13 and 14, the library will open at 10 a.m.

Starting Dec. 14 and going through finals week, the library will be open 24 hours for students.

At least two staff members will be on duty for safety, Hull said.

The students, Hull said, usually dictate the noise level of the library. They tend to be stricter about quiet sections during finals week, she said.

“In terms of the quiet and not-so-quiet [sections],” Hull said, “the students tend to police that themselves. I’ve been ‘shushed’ in the quiet reading room myself.”

Students can also reserve private study rooms for both the library and Rees-Jones during finals week, Hull said. Reservations are done online.
