Super Bowl XLIX is here and three former Horned Frogs will continue their legacy by playing in the biggest game of the year Sunday.

Former Frogs Clint Gresham, deep snapper for the Seattle Seahawks, Marcus Cannon, offensive lineman for the New England Patriots, and Josh Boyce, wide receiver for the Patriots, will participate in this year’s Super Bowl.

Gresham, from Corpus Christi, Texas, played for TCU from 2007 to 2009.

Gresham said Gary Patterson gave him a second chance even though he initially attended the University of Oklahoma.

“I went to Oklahoma my freshman year,” Gresham said, “and he let me transfer back, even though he offered me a scholarship and I turned him down.”

Gary Patterson said that he knew he was on to something special with Gresham, and offered him a scholarship.

“He didn’t initially come to TCU at the time, but it ended up being positive for the both of us,” Patterson said.

After going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, Gresham was picked up and cut by the Saints and then signed by the Seahawks, who won the Super Bowl in 2014.

Gresham is trying to become the second Horned Frog to be a repeat Super Bowl champion. The only other player to win the Super Bowl twice was Horned Frog cornerback Larry Brown, who played for the Dallas Cowboys, said Mark Cohen, assistant athletics director for media relations.

Marcus Cannon, from Odessa, Texas, played for TCU from 2007-10 and was drafted by the Patriots in 2011, according to TCU Athletics.

Cannon was a four-year letterman who earned All-American honors during his senior year at TCU. He was also a three-time all-conference offensive tackle during his time with the Frogs, said Cohen.

Joyce Boyce, from Copperas Cove, Texas, played for the Horned Frogs from 2010 to 2012, and was drafted by the Patriots in 2013.

Boyce is TCU’s career leader in touchdown catches. He had 22 touchdown catches in his TCU career and 66 receptions in 2012, which is TCU’s single season record, according to TCU Athletics.

TCU has a long history of Horned Frogs playing in the Super Bowl, said Cohen.

TCU is tied for fifth nationally for the most players in this year’s Super Bowl and is tied with Oklahoma State University for having the most players represented in the Super Bowl from the Big 12 Conference.

“We’ve had at least one player in the Super Bowl five out of the past seven years,” Cohen said, “Twenty-six different players from TCU have played on Super Bowl teams.”

Above all, Cohen said he valued the fact that the three players going to the Super Bowl this year all received their degree from TCU.

“The thing that’s most rewarding is that all three of those guys have their degrees,” Cohen said. “That’s one thing we take pride in. Academics are a big part of the TCU experience.”
