Amp It Uppers are making a difference for TCU athletics

The TCU Amp It Uppers are already making an impact in their first year of cheering at TCU athletic events.

With the help of Student Body President Cody Westphal, the Amp It Up group began last fall. He used Facebook to get the word out that TCU athletics was looking for students to get more involved during athletic events.

Senior Evan Anglin said he was immediately interested.

“I really think it’s changed the games, whether it’s TCU tennis, TCU football or TCU women’s basketball,” Anglin said.

The energetic group is easily recognizable with their signature purple and white striped overalls. Anglin said the idea came from the merging of TCU’s school colors and University of Wisconsin’s tendency to sport the striped look at Badger football games.

“We were like, what if we integrated our little TCU-ness into the stripes? So we got the TCU engraved and from there we’ve been wearing the stripes,” Anglin said.

“I wanted to do something different. I’m in APO, and I’m a film major. And I’m really enthusiastic, and I thought maybe I can make a change. Not leave a legacy, but start something that students can respond to,” Anglin said.

The group currently has five members. They’re looking to add to that number in the spring by possibly holding tryouts at the TCU purple and white football scrimmage.

Anglin said it takes a carefree attitude to be a TCU Amp It Upper.

“It’s just going for it and really not caring about what anybody thinks, and just know that you’re cheering for TCU and just giving it your all,” Anglin said.
