Students will have the opportunity to network with professionals in the broadcast world this Friday at the third annual Leaders in Media Conference

It will be held in the Dee J. Kelly Alumni and Visitors Center from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Panelists will discuss how their industries work, what their specific jobs are and their paths toward reaching professional goals.

The interaction between students and professionals is one of the things that makes the conference particularly important, Dr. Kimberly Owczarski, assistant professor of film-television-digital media, said. Owczarski is in charge of marketing for the conference.

“Seeing these people in the field and the steps they took to get there is really valuable,” Owczarski said.

This is helpful in preparing students for life after college and future career paths, she said.

“I’m hoping that students will use these opportunities of one-on-one time to talk with people in the field and learn and get their foot in the door,” Owczarski said.

The panelists come from a range of different media backgrounds, some operating at the national level and others at the local station level. Owczarski said she expects each professional to explain how marketing is involved in every step of the professional world. This process of marketing goes beyond simply advertising, she said.

Some of the panelists will also be speaking to different classes in the College of Communication throughout the week, Owczarski said.

“For our ‘Friday Night Lights’ class, we have a speaker coming in to talk in that class,” she said. “We’re doing a luncheon with her and then she is talking with another class. So we are having multiple touch points with her.”

Owczarski said she expects several hundred people to attend the event.
