Correction: The stats for Brian Trieglaff have been corrected.

Mother nature was the only thing that could hold down the Frog’s pitching staff on Saturday.

With two outs and a 1-1 count in the ninth inning, a lightning warning postponed the game until 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

After the Horned Frog’s 1-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Lupton Stadium, Mitchell Traver (6-1) was dominant in TCU’s 6-1 delayed matchup with Santa Clara .

The right-handed sophomore cruised through five innings of work, giving up just one hit and three walks, while striking out six batters.

Head coach Jim Schlossnagle said he thought a change in routine during the week helped Traver pitch better.

“He had good life to his fastball today,” Schlossnagle said. “We did a little less throwing with him during the week I think, so he’s throwing a little harder. Even when he was behind in counts, that allowed him to beat some guys.”

With a comfortable lead for Horned Frogs, Traver was pulled after allowing the Broncos’ first hit of the game.

TCU got their lead in the first inning and never looked back.

Evan Skoug drove in Connor Wanhanen with a double to right field in the first.

The Horned Frogs then broke open the game with a five-run second inning.

Keaton JonesNolan Brown, and Garrett Crain hit back-to-back-to-back singles to extend lead to 2-0.

After Zack Plunkett lined into a double play and Cody Jones was hit by a pitch, Jeremie Fagnan drove in a run with a single.

Wanhanen capped off the inning with a two-run triple to right field.

The freshman left fielder extended his hit streak to seven games.

Eric Lex (2-4) was in line for the loss for the Broncos.

He pitched four innings and gave up nine hits, six runs and two walks.

Santa Clara’s only run of the day came in the eighth inning.

TC Florentine singled, advanced to third on a past ball, and eventually scored on a groundout.

The unearned run came off Brian Trieglaff who pitched well in relief.

The sophomore right hander was in line for the save after hurling 3 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out seven.

Trieglaff was two strikes away from ending the game and giving the Horned Frogs a victory.

Schlossnagle said he has never faced a situation as unusual as this.

“I’ve never done anything like that,” Schlossnagle said. “I’ve finished an inning or two or more, but never just one out so hopefully we can get that out and move onto the next game.”
