Baseball team defeats Roadrunners 17-12

Sophomore Jason Coats knocked in a career high 7 RBIs as the No. 7 Horned Frog Baseball Team defeated the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners in a slugfest Tuesday night, 17 – 12, at Lupton Stadium.

On a night that hit as low as 42 degrees, Coats went 3 for 5 including one homerun and a double. The Frogs scored in all but one inning. Every Frog in the starting line up got at least one hit and scored a run.

Despite two errors that cost two runs and the TCU pitching giving up two big innings, the Frogs’ offense was able to pick up more than enough runs to get the win.

“Most of the time you want to win games with good pitching, good defense and timely hitting,” head coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “Tonight we did it with a lot of really good offense, timely pitching at the right time and just enough defense.”

Besides Coats, many other Frogs were big contributors in the game. Freshman Josh Elander had a three hit night with two RBIs while senior Bryan Holaday and sophomore Aaron Schultz each had a three-hit night.

“As a team, were feeling real confident right now and I think we’re going to take that into the tournament this weekend,” Coats said.

On the mound, senior Tyler Lockwood (1-0) picked up the win in relief of junior Greg Holle, who gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings. Lockwood went 2 1/3, giving up no runs and striking out two. Sophomore reliever Erik Miller also had a good night, going two scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

The Frogs got off to an early start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Capitalizing on with an error, Josh Elander hit a triple and was picked up by Jason Coats who hit a single. Sophomore Zac Jordan capped the scoring for the inning with a sacrifice fly.

The Roadrunners responded quickly in the top of the second with five runs which resulted in starter Holle being pulled out of the game. The Frogs quickly rebutted with two in the bottom to tie it.

After Lockwood shut the Roadrunners down in the third, the Frogs came alive with a five run inning in the bottom. Senior Matt Curry lead off with a double followed by singles from Zac Jordan and sophomore Taylor Featherson. Coats finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Schultz.

The Roadrunners would score twice more in the game. The first came when freshman Jake Wood hit a three run homerun in the fifth to close the Frogs’ lead to 11 – 9. The Frogs would answer in that inning, however, as Coats hit his third homerun of the season giving the Frogs a comfortable 14 – 9 lead.

Senior pitcher Eric Marshall had some trouble in the bottom of the ninth, giving up a 3 run shot to freshman Ryan Dalton but was able to close it out, giving the Frogs their second win in a row.

The Frogs improve to 6 -1 and will be on the road this weekend for the Houston College Classic. TCU will play Texas Tech it’s first game of the series at 7 p.m. on Friday at Minute Maid Park.
