BYU to leave the Mountain West Conference

BYU to leave the Mountain West Conference
Brigham Young University is set to leave the Mountain West Conference for the 2011 season and become an independent school in football, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

BYU would return to the Western Athletic Conference for the rest of the university’s athletics.

BYU would become the fourth independent team in college football along with Army, Navy and Notre Dame. The decision to leave the Mountain West was made after rival school Utah left the conference to join the Pacific 10 and the Big 12 made an announcement that they did not plan to expand. The Big 12 now consists of 10 teams after Nebraska left for the Big 10.

The change would need approval from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. BYU has a press conference planned for early next week.
