College students seem to have a reliance on caffeine to get them through lectures and late night study sessions, but there are healthier alternatives to power through the day.

Construction workers have temporarily narrowed traffic on both sides of University Drive to make walkways safer and to add a unique look to the street, a TCU Physical Plant official said.

Jesse Rangel, the project manager overseeing the work, said the project should be completed by mid-December and that as of Nov. 18, the project was on schedule.

An estimated 12-by-25 foot brick logo will also be installed at the center of the University Drive and West Cantey Street intersection, Rangel said.

The changes are part of a beautification plan the university undertook to prepare for Super Bowl XLV in Arlington, he said. The City of Fort Worth repaved the road before construction began.

Bill Verkest, director of the city's Transportation and Public Works Department, confirmed that the university had undertaken the project, not the city. He said the city finished repaving the road Aug. 25 and that the cosmetic changes were not done to prepare for the Super Bowl.

"It was repaved because it needed to be repaved," Verkest said. "The Super Bowl was not a factor in that decision process."

Verkest said the city approved the university's project before the start of the fall 2010 semester. The university is allowed to put TCU logos in the walkways, which cross a public street, as long as the logos are placed in areas adjacent to the campus, he said.

Rangel said the university hired general contractor C.C. Zamora Construction to complete the work. The total cost for the project had not yet been determined.
