FORT WORTH—The TCU men’s basketball program has added Reggie Brown as an assistant coach, head coach Jim Christian announced Thursday. Brown spent the last two seasons in a similar role at SMU.

Brown will fill one of the vacancies created by the departures of former Horned Frog assistants Eric Haut and Armon Gates, who accepted positions at Kent State and Loyola Chicago, respectively.

“We are excited to have Reggie join our coaching staff,” Christian said. “Reggie is a young, talented coach and recruiter who has been successful as both an assistant coach and dating back to his days as a player. His experience on the DFW and Texas recruiting trails will also be a big asset to this program. Reggie and his family will make a wonderful addition to TCU and the Fort Worth community.”

You can really notice from the outside the momentum that is building within this program and university, and I wanted to be a part of that.”

A veteran on the DFW college coaching scene for the last decade-plus, Brown most recently helped SMU record its two best seasons since joining Conference USA prior to 2005-06. He recently concluded his second year with the Mustangs, which marked the program’s most successful campaign in more than a decade. The squad advanced to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).

Prior to his time at SMU, Brown served seven years as an assistant coach at UT Arlington, where he was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2008-09 season. During his tenure, the Mavericks won the 2008 Southland Tournament to earn their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, while he also helped the squad win the 2004 Southland Conference regular season championship. In seven seasons with the Mavericks, he helped coach 11 student-athletes to 13 all-conference honors, including four first-team selections.

Brown, an Arlington native who starred for Sam Houston High School, played at UTA from 1993-97, averaging 16.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game during his career. He started every game over his final two years in a Maverick uniform. During his junior season, he averaged a career-high 19.0 points and 4.3 assists while ranking fifth in the Southland Conference in steals and sixth in the league in assists. Brown closed out his UTA career by averaging 16.0 points and 3.0 assists per game as a senior in 1996-97. He also excelled academically, earning recognition as a member of the SLC’s All-Academic team in 1994-95.

Following his collegiate career, Brown went to Europe to play professionally and spent the 1997-98 season with the Tolka Rovers in Ireland. That season, he averaged 24 points and appeared on the cover of one of Ireland’s basketball magazines.

Brown returned to UTA following that season to complete his bachelor’s degree in speech communication, which he did in 1999. He later coach at Arlington Bowie High School from 1999-2002, serving as the junior varsity boys basketball coach and a varsity assistant. At Bowie, Brown’s teams won three district championships and one bi-district title.
