Frogs continue weekend winning streak with 6-1 victory over Wyoming

TCU’s women’s tennis team won its second-straight Mountain West Conference match of the weekend Saturday afternoon, picking up a 6-1 win over Wyoming.

With the win, TCU improved to 9-10 on the season and 4-3 in the MWC. The Cowgirls dropped to 11-8 and 1-5.

“We were down 3-0 in the third at No. 2, and we were down a set and 3-0 at No 5,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “I thought Olivia Smith played really well at No. 3. Idunn Hertzberg really excelled in the doubles. It was the most aggressive I’ve seen her play and it really made a difference to win the doubles point going into singles.”

While TCU dropped a tiebreak to fall at No. 1 doubles, Federica Denti and Smith were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles over Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger. Hertzberg and Gaby Mastromarino added a gritty 9-7 decision at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for TCU.

The Frogs got back to work in the singles, winning straight-set matches at Nos. 3 and 4. Smith was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Simona Synkova at No. 3 to improve to 6-1 against conference foes.

Denti followed with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph of her own over Kim van Ginkel at No. 4 singles to score the third point for the Purple and White.

TCU’s other three wins came in three-set fashion at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 singles after falling on the short end of three-set matches last weekend against UNLV and San Diego State.

Katariina Tuohimaa won her fifth MWC match in six tries when she picked up a 7-6 (8), 4-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 1 singles. The Helsinki, Finland, native is in line to bring home her fourth-straight All-MWC honor.

Mastromarino was a 7-6 (4), 0-6, 7-5 winner over Kovacs at No. 2 singles and Sahoo added a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.

TCU closes the MWC season tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m., matchup with Air Force. The Frogs are 5-0 all-time against the Falcons.
