College students seem to have a reliance on caffeine to get them through lectures and late night study sessions, but there are healthier alternatives to power through the day.

Frogs volleyball off to record start with victory

The Horned Frogs volleyball team is 9-1 with a defeat over Davidson College Friday night matching the record of their best start in school history.It was the second time in a row the Frogs took five games to win.

The Frogs and the Wildcats had tight flip-flopped wins with scores of: 30-17, 24-30, 30-23, 25-30, and 15-8.

Prentice Lewis, the head volleyball coach, said the team did a lot well.

“It doesn’t matter if we do it in three or if we do it in five,” Lewis said. “I’m very happy in general how my team is doing.”

Emily Allen, a red-shirted junior said, “We were up and down. We need to work on keeping our focus.”

Lewis said the team did a better job connecting with setter Nirelle Hampton, a sophomore, in particular Anna Vaughn, a senior middle.

Vaughn led the Frogs with 19 kills through out the match.

Lauren Otto, a freshman, had 12 kills and 12 digs for her second-straight double-double this season, according to gofrogs.com.

On the defensive side, Calli Corley, a senior, had 22 digs.

“I’m relieved,” Otto said , “It feels really good to win.”

Frogs want to work on is keeping their focus to maintain consistency, said Lewis.

Otto said, ” We need to take our opponent seriously.”

The Frogs don’t have a chance to practice before their next game, Lewis said.

“We need to come in tomorrow morning ready and more focused to put the points together,” Lewis said.

This was the Frogs first game in the Nike/LaQuinta Invitational hosted by TCU.

The Frogs’ next matches in the Nike/LaQuinta Invitational are Saturday. They will play Centenary at 1 p.m. and Ole Miss at 4 p.m. at the University Recreation Center.
