Health center’s effort to sell cheaper birth control praiseworthy

The Health Center is currently working toward being able to sell brand name contraceptives at a discounted price.

This is an admirable effort by the Health Center to help a great number of students by making birth control more affordable.

Many female students on TCU’s campus take birth control for an array of reasons, and the health center has recognized the needs of students and is doing something to help curb the cost for those women who prefer to use a brand-name product.

The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 took university health centers off a list that granted them discounted prices for brand-name contraceptives.

While the generic brands are often cheaper, some women don’t respond well to the products and are stuck paying up to five or ten times as much for their name-brand contraceptive.

The health center has clearly recognized what a burden the cost of contraceptives can be on the backs of students and is helping the problem.

As prices are rising in all areas of students’ lives – from textbooks, to groceries and gas – any help that can be offered is a weight lifted from the shoulders of students.

The health center deserves a pat on the back for recognizing a student need and taking a step to remedy a problem that impacts many women on campus.
