TheLady Frogs started their season off on the right foot by maintaining their undefeated record against the University of Texas-Pan American Saturday.

The team won in straight sets in singles and won all three doubles matches.

Coach Dave Borelli said it has been awhile since he had coached a team to shut out opponents.

“It was kind of nice to sit back and kinda take in a little bit and not worry about the opponents and how they do things,” Borelli said. “We just had a really hot day today.”

Junior Gaby Mastromarino and freshman Olivia Smith sealed the first win for the Horned Frogs at No. 3 doubles. They defeated sisters Dana and Zalina Nazarova of UTPA, 8-1.

At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Federica Denti and senior Katariina Tuohimaa clinched an easy win of 8-1 over UTPA.

To win the doubles point, seniors Maria Babanova and Idunn Hertzberg defeated UTPA 8-3, after stuggling with a few double faults.

Hertzberg and Denti both won their singles matches 6-0 at No. 5 singles and No. 2 singles, respectively. Hertzberg defeated UTPA’s Wanda Bequelin, while Denti beat Reeta Raty.

Hertzberg said it felt great to win her last first match as a Horned Frog.

“I haven’t played a match since last November, so it was a good start to the year,” Hertzberg said. “It’s always good to win the first match.”

At No. 1 singles, Tuohimaa struggled to win from behind in the first set 6-4. She clinched the second set 6-0.

In order to make a comback and take the first set, Tuohimaa said she had to forget about the games she lost.

“I really just had to stop thinking,” Tuohimaa said. “That’s all there is to it.”

The Horned Frogs captured the singles point after winning all six singles matches.

The Horned Frogs are now 1-0 on the season. Their next matchup will be in Berkeley, Calif. at the ITA Kickoff Weekend Jan. 28 against St. Mary’s in the opening round.
