The TCU men’s tennis team continued its perfect spring season after its 7-0 win against the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

TCU improved its overall record to 9-0 and freshman Zach Nichols clinched the victory for the Horned Frogs, winning his match in the fifth slot.

Nichols has been perfect this season in both doubles and singles, and with his wins Saturday, he improved his record to a combined 18-0.

Nichols said TCU head coach Dave Borelli has helped him out many times this year, trying to keep Nichols and the rest of the players on the team loose and preventing them from becoming flustered.

“If you’re not playing well, he will tell you to calm down and slow up the match,” Nichols said. “He will give you tips here and there that you might not have noticed in a match, and sometimes he will crack a few jokes to help you relax.”

Senior Cosmin Cotet said the chemistry on this team is amazing, attributing it as one of the main reasons this team has been perfect thus far.

“We are best friends, and that is what makes us a really tough team this year,” Cotet said. “Everybody is competing and cheering for each other.”

After his first singles loss of the season against Texas Tech last Sunday, Feb. 17, Cotet rebounded with a victory in the one slot. He said he mostly focused on getting his mind right, and Borelli was very important in that process.

“He always makes us feel like we are top 10 in the world, and he told me to keep calm and just compete,” Cotet said. “Doing that, I played well today and won pretty easily.”

Borelli said competing is what his team does best, and it is one of their biggest strengths.

“I think we are a very good pressure team; the more pressure that’s on the kids, the better they seem to play,” Borelli said. “The chemistry is really great; they have fun together, and they compete very well .”

Borelli said this team is probably one of the best groups of competitive players he has ever been around.

As proud as Borelli was of his team’s never say die attitude, he thought the focus was not there against Minnesota.

“I think the focus was more on the match tomorrow against Oklahoma State, but the good thing about our team is you are going to have to be a better team to beat us,” Borelli said. “We are not going to beat ourselves.”

TCU won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage in the match, and freshman players Adrian Simon and Emanu Brighiu sealed the perfect 7-0 win, beating their singles opponents in second set tie breakers.
