Movie review: ‘Semi-Pro’ is great for college students

The 1970s are upon us once again with the hit single “Love Me Sexy” and short shorts – well, maybe not. From anchorman to ice-skater, soccer coach to a race-car driver, Will Ferrell is at it again, and this time it’s basketball.

Scot Armstrong, who wrote screenplays for “Old School” and “Road Trip,” continues his success in the comedy realm with “Semi-Pro,” providing the audience with highly anticipated laughs.

Will Ferrell’s character Jackie Moon is the manager, coach and player of a failing team in the former American Basketball Association. His only hope for survival comes when the National Basketball Association decides to merge the two leagues, taking the top four ABA teams. Moon begins doing everything in his power to win, from wrestling a bear at halftime to wearing mascara for intimidation, and the team begins winning games with the help of some rowdy fans.

“Semi-Pro” is truly another sports parody with its afros, high-socks and short shorts. Yet, while funny at times, the comedy genre seems to be taking a turn for the worst in its content, earning a well-reasoned R rating. “Semi-Pro” uses an unnecessary amount of foul language and sexual references, but I am afraid to say that this could be what is attracting audiences everywhere.

With Woody Harrelson and Will Arnett, “Semi-Pro” keeps you entertained from beginning to end and will have you laughing all the way through. Although not a movie for younger kids, this film is a great attraction for college students, mainly those guys who are looking for a rags-to-riches sports film.
