College students seem to have a reliance on caffeine to get them through lectures and late night study sessions, but there are healthier alternatives to power through the day.

No. 65 TCU scraps to .500 after 6-1 defeat of MWC rival BYU

The TCU women’s tennis team won its fourth straight match and won its opening Mountain West Conference match with a 6-1 win over BYU Friday.

The Frogs (6-6, 1-0 MWC) won all three doubles matches. TCU’s No. 3 doubles team of seniors Maria Babanova and Idunn Hertzberg defeated BYU’s Elle Carney and Aubrey Paul, 8-5.

At the No. 3 slot junior Gaby Mastromarino and sophomore Olivia Smith notched another TCU victory over Elizaveta Ezhova and Desiree Tran. Sophomore Federica Denti and senior Katariina Tuohimaa continued the Frogs’ doubles success with an 8-6 win over Callie Craig and Megan Price.

“I thought we competed well today, especially in the big points,” TCU head women’s tennis coach David Borelli said. “It was good to start with a win and we’ve just got to keep building from here forward. Once we get back to the locker room, it’s time to focus on the next match.”

In singles play, Tuohimaa defeated Price 6-3, 6-1 win over Price. Smith defeated Tran 3-0, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 position.

TCU junior Shalini Sahoo won her sixth-straight match at the No. 6 postion, 7-6, 6-0 against Paul.

Denti (6-4) is riding a five-match winning steak after a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 1-0 defeat of Craig.

Up next

TCU will welcome Utah at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center tomorrow at 10 a.m. TCU will also continue MWC play Sunday at 10 a.m. versus New Mexico.
