Weekend sweep extends winning streak to nine

Weekend sweep extends winning streak to nine

Add another win to the Horned Frogs‘ season high nine-game winning streak, with the latest coming in extra-innings against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Runnin’ Rebels, for TCU’s second conference series sweep of the season. Additionally, the Horned Frogs remain undefeated in the month of April.

Pinch-hitter Jimmie Pharr‘s tenth inning single scored catcher Bryan Holaday, providing TCU with a 3-2 win.

With one out in the tenth, Holaday singled and then advanced to second on a wild-pitch by UNLV’s Adam Moser.

Pharr faced a 1-2 count before hitting a line drive into left field to easily plate Holaday for the win.

Pharr said it felt great to help the team get the victory and said the team feels that it always has a chance to win.

To keep the game alive and push the Sunday afternoon matchup into extra frames, TCU needed ninth-inning heroics to overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Third baseman Matt Carpenter doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth for his third extra-base hit of the series. Designated hitter Hunt Woodruff stepped up next for the Horned Frogs, and came up big hitting the game-tying single.

Not only did the victory extend the Horned Frogs’ winning streak and give them their second conference series sweep, but also featured perhaps the most exciting play of their season.

With UNLV runners on first and second, Rebel Braden Walker botched a bunt attempt on a Trent Appleby delivery. Appleby made a diving catch, threw to second to get one runner who didn’t tag up, then shortstop Bryan Kervin chased down the remaining base runner to complete the triple play.

Appleby said it was the first triple play he has ever been a part of, and was not even aware it was a possibility at first.

“I was looking to get the play at third,” Appleby said. “I caught it and Holaday had to yell ‘two’. I didn’t even know. I looked up and threw it to second and figured I just got a double play. (It) helped me out a lot.”

Schlossnagle said the triple play was great but the team had to battle for 10 innings and needed every one of them to win.

“I’m sitting there thinking in the ninth inning how many times to do you get a triple play and lose? That doesn’t happen very often,” Schlossnagle said.

Schlossnagle said playing UNLV is always tough on him because he never likes to beat the Runnin’ Rebels’ head coach Buddy Gouldsmith.

“This is my best friend in the world,” Schlossnagle said. “It’s obviously better when than us losing but I don’t enjoy playing friends.”

The win gave TCU the season advantage over UNLV, going 1-2 in the first series for a 4-2 record against the Runnin’ Rebels.

This series was almost a complete reversal of the Horned Frogs’ first series against UNLV at the end of March, in which UNLV won games two and three in the ninth inning. This time around TCU won games one and three in the late innings.

The win also put TCU in third in the Mountain West Conference at 8-4, behind the University of New Mexico which at 8-4 owns the tie-breaker with an advantage in the season series.

Horned Frog starting pitcher Greg Holle threw seven innings allowing two runs and three hits. This was the third performance of the series where a Horned Frog stater went at least six innings on the mound.

Andrew Cashner was the pitcher of record for the Horned Frogs after one inning of relief work where he struck out two batters and improved to 7-1 on the season.

Center fielder Clint Arnold hit safely for the eighth straight game, finishing with a pair of hits Sunday afternoon.
