The women’s soccer team will play Weber State University in Lubbock on Friday with fresh legs, head coach Dan Abdalla said.

Juniors Nikki Wilbur and Cheryl Martin sat out the weekend’s games in Colorado due to injuries, but now, Abdalla said, the players should add diligent spirit to the game.

“They’re both significant contributors to our blue-collar mentality,” Abdalla said. “They do the dirty work to allow other players to have a little more freedom.”

The blue-collar mentality, Abdalla said, was the hard-work ethic Martin and Wilbur brought to the team.

Senior forward Lizzy Karoly said Wilbur and Martin, listed as midfielders and defenders on the team’s roster, dealt well with in-the-air soccer balls and would help the team defensively.

Despite the returning players, Abdalla said the Wildcats’ Jessie Baddley was dangerous.

A redshirt forward and sophomore who transferred to Weber State last year, Baddley sat out last season, but her 2007 statistics showed activity. As a freshman at Santa Clara University, Baddley played in 20 of 21 games, and she started in three. During the 2007 season with Santa Clara, Baddley contributed in shots-on-goal and assists from the front.

The Wildcats played with a unique strategy in the defensive end, Abdalla said. The team’s sweeper, the last defensive player besides the goalkeeper, played deep in the field.

Offensively, the Lady Frogs will need to be aware of opportunities in front of the goal, Abdalla said.

Karoly said composure will be the key when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net.

“We want a Mountain West Conference championship; we want to make it to the NCAA championships,” Karoly said. “We know that we just need to communicate, work hard, and play with heart and passion. If we do that, I think we can beat anyone.”
