Womens tennis takes weekend match against Air Force

The No. 22 TCU women’s tennis team shut out Mountain West Conference opponent Air Force 7-0 Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

This victory brought the Horned Frogs one step closer to dominating the same three-day series they swept last season without losing a match, having also already blanking the Colorado State Rams. Sundays’ match against the Wyoming Cowboys is the Horned Frogs all that stands in their way of two consecutive years of sweeping the three-day, three-team series.

TCU, which has defeated the Air Force Falcons for three straight seasons, improved its overall record to 12-4, while the Falcons fell to 5-15 this season.

The freshman duo of Idunn Hertzberg and Katariina Tuohimaa paired up at the No. 1 position to dominate junior Christine Abayan and sophomore Erlyn Rudico 8-5.

Tuohimaa’s winning streak continued when she downed freshman Meghan Kiser in her singles match 6-0, 6-0.

Hertzberg followed with her 13th win of the season against Katrina Eromin 6-1, 6-3.

Junior Anna Sydorska and senior Kewa Nichols teamed up at the No. 2 position to dominate seniors Erika Shortridge and Lauren Wilson 8-2.

At the No. 2 singles position, Sydorska dominated Wilson once again with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

Nichols went on to defeat freshman Samantha Sarkis in singles play 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Nina Munch-Soegaard and freshman Maria Babanova paired up at the No. 3 position to beat freshman Christen Monreal and Sarkis 8-1.

No. 1 Munch-Soegaard added another win to her record with a score of 6-0, 6-2 against junior Christine Abayan.

Babanova won her second match of the day against Monreal 6-2, 6-1.

The Horned Frogs will complete the same three-day series they swept last season on Sunday when they play the Wyoming Cowgirls.

Hammond said Air Force is a team that consists of great athletes with good attitudes.

“It is always an honor to play Air Force,” Hammond said. “These kids are going to be in charge of defending our country.”
