Women’s tennis team defeats rivals

The No. 22 TCU women’s tennis team defeated Wyoming Sunday at the Bartzen Varsity Courts for its sixth consecutive win, completing a three-game conference opening weekend sweep.

The women’s team climbed 13-4 overall and in the Mountain West, while Wyoming dropped to 10-7 and 0-2 in conference.

“This was a good weekend for the girls and the matches were sustained with concentration and energy,” said Jefferson Hammond, head coach to the TCU women’s tennis team. “I’m proud of my girls.”

The Horned Frogs won the double point to start the day. Freshmen Idunn Hertzberg and Katariina Tuohimaa completed the double sweep with an 8-5 win.

Hertzberg said the match went quickly and the team did well.

The singles match began with a sixth consecutive win for sophomore Nina Munch-Soegaard by defeating Wyoming’s Corina Lazar with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The next victory in singles was by Tuohimaa who pushed TCU ahead 3-0 after defeating the Cowgirls’ Carly Van Hollen.

Junior Macall Harkins secured the win with a 6-0, 6-1 score against Wyoming’s Rebecca Berger.

Austin native and senior Kewa Nichols won her sixth consecutive match against Michelle Brown with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

“We played all three matches with lots of focus,” Nichols said. “I’m ready for the next one.”

The Horned Frogs will have their next Mountain West Conference match on April 4 at noon against No. 62 University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in Las Vegas.
