Spring Break in the 109

Rather than heading to the beach or the slopes for spring break this year, residents of the 109 need to look no further than their own ZIP code for family fun and entertainment.

Fort Worth Zoo

At the Fort Worth Zoo, located just outside the 109, first through sixth grade children can participate in the zoo’s Spring Break camp March 14-15 and March 17-18. The two day camp sessions are packed with educational activities, crafts and trips into the zoo.

For Zoo members, the cost is $130 per session and the price is $140 per session for non-Zoo members. The camp lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the price includes a snack and dinner for participants. Space is limited, so for more information or to register today, visit www.fortworthzoo.org or call 817-759-7200.

If the entire family is looking for wildlife fun, the Zoo will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission costs are $12 for adults and $9 for children over 3 years old. Admission for toddlers, 2 years old and younger, is free.

Log Cabin Village

Across South University Drive at the Log Cabin Village, residents can use their spring break to travel back in time and enjoy family fun and story time.

On March 18 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., bring your 3- to 5-year-old to the Log Cabin Village for Timber Tales Storytime. The featured story for the spring break weekend is "Texas Zeke and the Longhorn" by David Davis. The price is $4 per child and includes the story, crafts and other activities.

Following the 10 a.m. story time, there is another story presentation geared toward deaf and hearing-impaired visitors. The March 18 Timber Tales Sign Language Storytime features the story "Dance at Grandpa’s" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The cost is $4 per visitor and the program is geared toward children ages 3 to 7.

The Spring break fun continues at Log Cabin Village on March 19 with the village’s "Strike While the Iron’s Hot" event. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can experience presentations of embroidering, blacksmithing, woodworking and more. The cost is regular village admission, $4 for children over 4 years old and $4.50 for adults, plus an additional $2 fee for crafts.

For more information on the Log Cabin Village or to reserve your story time spot visit www.logcabinvillage.org or call 817-392-5881.

Kimbell Art Museum

If you’re looking for a free event during your child’s spring break "staycation," the Kimbell Art Museum is offering a free "Art Extravaganza" March 15 through March 18.

The Kimbell Art Museum is located just outside the 109 off Camp Bowie Boulevard and their free extravaganza is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from noon to 5 p.m. Friday.

The spring break special caters to adults and children of all ages and features a variety of activities and exhibits including films for adult audiences and children’s films. Visitors can also use their own creative skills to practice print-making techniques, paint or draw.

For some outdoor family activities, spring breakers can explore the Trinity River trails located in and around the 109.

Walking, jogging and biking the trails can provide entertainment for all ages, not to mention the numerous parks located around the trails.

There are several rules to remember, including trail hours, which are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. If you take a pet, it must be on a leash.
