Kickboxing gym gives 109ers a new way to stay fit

Jab. Jab. Hook. The crisp sound of a fresh pair of gloves hitting the heavy bag is a familiar sound at 9Round, the new kickboxing gym located in the 109.

Owned by David Luffey, the franchised gym, at 3049 Greene Ave., offers a 30-minute, full-body, cardio kickboxing workout. Nine challenging stations incorporate upper body, lower body, and core strength training.

“When I went to 9Round for the first time, I was surprised at how helpful the trainers were,” Caroline Gayler, one of the gym’s first clients, said. “They work hard to make sure I am being pushed to my limit, which I love.”

Luffey is frequently asked what makes 9Round different from other workouts, he said. At 9Round, there are no class times. With the ding of a bell every three minutes, a new workout starts, which allows clients to come and go on their own schedules. Luffey also creates a different workout each morning to keep it fresh, fun and challenging for his clients.

“I have never done the same workout twice since I started at 9Round,” Victoria Thomas, a new member, said. “David does an awesome job mixing it up and working with me to help me get the best workout possible.”

Blaring music fills the gym from the moment it opens until the moment Luffey locks the door at night. Playing anything from today’s hits to oldie remixes, the music creates a fun and energetic atmosphere that keeps the fast-paced, up-tempo cardio workout alive. Luffey and his staff aim to make 9Round seem like a nightclub without the drinks, he said.

After five years of working as a superintendent for a construction company, Luffey decided he needed to do something different. He said 9Round is the perfect fit because it allows him to do the things he enjoys the most: work out and help others achieve their fitness goals.

Because the Fort Worth area is very active and health conscious, Luffey said he knew 9Round would be successful near the TCU campus. Within the first two weeks of opening, 100 clients signed up for memberships, and they have yet to experience a slow day.

“Working the floor all day at 9Round can be challenging and sometimes exhausting,” he said. “But when people come up to me and say, ‘Awesome workout’ or ‘Thank you,’ it turns into a very rewarding process.”

9Round is located next to Café Brazil under the Grand Marc.  Hours are: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, and closed on Sunday.
