Duo of Independence Day parades planned for 109

Four neighborhood associations—Tanglewood, Overton Park, Overton West and Westcliff West—will offer two unique Fourth of July parades on Friday.

Westcliff West's parade has been a tradition for more than 17 years, Marc Meadows, the Neighborhood Association’s president, said.

“In years past, we have had antique tractors and bagpipers,” he said. “And someone always seems to bring the water guns.”

This year, the parade will feature antique fire trucks. Meadows also said five car clubs, including the Corvette and Volkswagen clubs, will be participating.

Westcliff West’s parade starts at 10 a.m. and will begin at the First Congregational Church located at 4201 Trail Lake Drive. Children attending the parade can join in with the bicycles that bring up the tail end of the parade, Meadows said.

In addition, Tanglewood, Overton Park and Overton West neighborhoods will collaborate to put on another parade.

That parade starts at 9 a.m. and will begin at the corner of Woodwick Court and Overton Park Drive W. A parade flyer asks that children wanting to participate in the parade line up at 8:30 a.m. on Woodwick Court.

Both parades ask participants to line up 30 minutes prior to their start, and all participants as well as attendees are invited to join in block parties after the parades, according to parade flyers. Westcliff West’s block party will be held at the First Congregational Church. And Tanglewood, Overton Park and Overton West's will happen on Chaparral Lane at Overton Park Drive E.

Tom Sylvester, Tanglewood Neighborhood Leadership Association’s team member, said they will have two special tables set up this year: one for the Tanglewood food drive and the other for Service to Mankind, (SERTOMA). The food drive table will be accepting cans of food or a cash or check donation. The SERTOMA table will have copies of the Declaration of Independence and small flags for the kids as well as earplugs and additional information about their club.
