Fort Worth native Ornette Coleman, one of the most influential contributors to the world of jazz, died at 85 this morning in New York City.
The New York Times reported his cause of death as cardiac arrest.
According to the Fort Worth ISD, Coleman was born in 1930 in Fort Worth.
The legendary saxophonist began playing while attending I.M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth.
Among his great accomplishments, Coleman won the Pulitzer Prize for his 2005 recording of “Sound Grammar.”  Over the course of his six-decade career, he also received a Grammy, the MacArthur “genius” award and the Miles Davis award.
He is honored on the Fort Worth ISD Wall of Fame.
