This weekend is National Adoption Weekend and Fort Worth Animal Care and Control has partnered with PetSmart for an adoption fair that is reducing adoption fees to $10.
The adoption fee includes a microchip, all vaccinations including rabies, a city license and their spay or neuter, said Brandon Bennett, director of public health and code compliance at the city of Fort Worth.
Dogs and cats will be available for adoption. The event begins Feb. 12 and ends Sunday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s day.
“If someone’s looking for a house pet, or a companion pet, maybe for a pet they already have, this weekend will be a great opportunity,” said Bennett.
Buddies Place Cat Rescue is also participating at the PetSmart Hulen location, although their cats will not have a reduced adoption fee, said CEO Lyn Sykes.
Bennett said most of the animals available for adoption were found as strays.
“A few that are, maybe, a little on the lean side, those are the best ones to take home,” said Bennett. “A little bit of time, a little bit of love and care, they end up being the best pets for life.”
The Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Shelter has a live release rate of 92 percent, which is one of the highest in the state and nation, said Bennett.
“92 percent means there is still 8 percent of the animals in our shelter that we have to try to find homes for,” said Bennett.
Bennett said the shelter is hoping to find homes for 200 animals this weekend.
“It [the adoption fair] gives us an opportunity to try to save more lives,” said Bennett.
