For the second Sunday night in a row, TCU basketball is making news.

Last Sunday, around 11:30 p.m., news broke that TCU had fired head coach Trent Johnson after a four-year stint with the team.

Last night, rumors started swirling that the Frogs have found his replacement.

Jamie Dixon, the current head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers, is rumored to be in the closing stages of a deal with TCU to become the new head coach.

Dixon played at TCU from 1984-1987 before embarking on a short minor-league basketball career. He has been the coach at Pittsburgh since 2003 and was the Naismith Coach of the Year in 2009.

He was rumored to be on the short list for the position immediately after Johnson was fired, but because Pittsburgh is a perennial NCAA Tournament team, many believed that Dixon would not leave a more successful program for Fort Worth.

CBS first reported that Dixon was in contract talks with TCU on Sunday afternoon, just two days after Pittsburgh was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Sunday night that an announcement naming Dixon as the new head coach could be made as early as Monday or Tuesday. 

Dixon’s contract with Pittsburgh runs until 2023, and his buyout clause is around $10 million, the Star-Telegram reported. He currently earns $3.2 million per year. 

Still, it’s important to note that all of these reports come without official word from TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte.

While nothing is certain, the hire would be an impressive accomplishment for a basketball program that has struggled over the past few seasons. Dixon’s name brings credibility, and his resume could boost recruiting.

At the very least, he’s made for another entertaining Sunday night for TCU basketball fans.
