The Horned Frogs defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders Wednesday with a 76-62 win in the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena.

The Frogs came out of the gate cold, missing their first eleven shots from the field, but that didn’t stop them from taking an 18-12 lead over the Red Raiders by the time the first quarter came to a close.  TCU led by 15 at the end of the 3rd quarter, enough to distance themselves from Texas Tech for the win.

The horned frogs, now 12-11 (4-8 Big 12), are tied for fifth place in the conference standings with the win. Head coach Raegan Pebley credited the win to a strong defense.

“The best offense tonight was our defense being able to take that lid off the basket to get into the transition game through rebounding and getting stops,” Pebley said.

Both coaches described the game as tough.

“Tech is a good team,” Pebley said. “We knew we had our hands full and when we see them again we know that it’s not going to be easy.”

Texas Tech head coach Candace Whitaker said the competition across the Big 12 is fierce, but specifically credited TCU players for their performances, including that of AJ Alix, who finished the night with 20 points and nine assists.

“AJ Alix does a great job for them,” Whitaker said. “We had a hard time in transitions, guarding her off.”

The solid outing didn’t stop with Alix. Jordan Moore picked up her second straight double-double of the season with 14 rebounds and 11 points in the win. TCU guard/forward Jada Butts also impressed with a game-high 23 points in the win.

Butts said the team’s main goal remains an invitation to the NCAA tournament this spring.

“We still have a chance to get to the tournament and we’re working on it every day,” Butts said.

The Frogs will be back in action when they host No.2 Baylor at the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena at 3 p.m. on Feb. 12. The game will televised on ESPN 2.
