No. 3 ranked TCU fell to Grand Canyon Sunday afternoon in the bottom of the 12th inning, ending in a 9-8 loss at Grand Canyon Ballpark.

The game started off slow until the GCU Lopes scored the first run in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Ian Evans’ two-out double gave them the lead. TCU junior Luken Baker launched his first home run of the season in the fourth inning to tie the game. It marks the 20th home run of his career.

GCU answered with another run in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single from Griffin Barnes to regain the lead. The Lopes took control in the fifth after scoring another four, making it a 6-1 game. An error allowed the one run to score, but the Cuba Bess’ three-run home run set the momentum.

The Horned Frogs made a comeback in the sixth with A.J. Balta’s RBI-double, his second multi-hit game of the year and the 28th of his career. Two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch, a balk and an error that allowed Frogs to score four runs in the seventh to tie the game at six at the top of the seventh.

Both teams played aggressive defense so both unable to score, leading to extra innings. TCU sophomore Haylen Green pitched two perfect innings, followed by 1 2/3 perfect innings for Cal Coughlin. Junior Durbin Feltman followed on to the mound after Green, walking one and striking out four in his two innings. The bases were loaded with no outs in the top of the 12th when TCU sophomore Zach Humphreys broke the 6-6 tie with a base hit to left. A bases-loaded walk to infielder Adam Oviedo pushed the lead to 8-6.

Two TCU errors gave the Lopes an opportunity to take advantage in the bottom of the 12th to score three runs. Austin Boyles came on to the mound and got two quick outs which seemed there would be another extra inning with the game still tied at 6-6; however, an errant throw allowed the winning run to score.

TCU goes 2-1 overall and will play game four Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium as they host UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised on FSSW.
