Track and Field: Senior breaks another school record

Senior Scotty Newton broke the outdoor school triple jump record in Fayetteville, Arkansas, this weekend.

Field Events

In the men’s triple jump, indoor record holder senior Scotty Newton broke the outdoor school record with a distance of 54 feet 4.5 inches (16.57m). Newton secured a third-place finish. The previous record was 54 feet 3.5 inches (16.55m) and was set in 2008 by Jonathan Jackson.

Freshman Chengetayi Mapaya also competed in the triple jump, producing a personal-best distance of 53 feet 3.75 inches (16.25m) and a seventh-place finish.

In the women’s long jump, junior Chyna Ries secured first place with a personal-best distance of 19 feet 8.25 inches. Senior Briona Oliver placed seventh with a distance of 18 feet 5.25 inches (5.63m).

In the women’s pole vault, sophomore Kendahl Shue produced a personal-best distance of 12 feet 8.25 inches (3.87m) and a fifth-place finish.

In the men’s discus, sophomore Ryan Camp placed third behind a distance of 177 feet 10 inches (54.20m).

Running Events

The men’s 4×400-relay team of junior Darrion Flowers, sophomore Emmanuel Ogwo, sophomore Jostyn Andrews and sophomore Derrick Mokaleng recorded a season-best time of 3:03.74 and a fourth-place finish.

In the men’s 400-meter dash, Mokaleng placed third behind a time of 45.87.

In the women’s 5000-meter race, freshman Evelyn Mandel placed fourth with a time of 16:54.08, junior Elizabeth Baker placed seventh with a time of 17:58.41 and junior Kirsten Johnston placed eighth with a time of 18:13.36.

Flowers placed seventh in the men’s 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 21.05.

Junior Erin Barth placed seventh in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:35.43.

Up Next

The Horned Frogs will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 11.
