Despite the 14th career shutout of goalie Emily Alvarado, TCU soccer opened their season with a tie against Baylor on Friday night after two overtimes.

Alvarado finished with four saves in the contest.

“I’m really proud of the group,” head coach Eric Bell said. “It’s like college football. You practice, practice, intrasquad scrimmage and you don’t play anybody until your first game. To come out and play the way we played with our group, it was pretty darn good. I thought the level was quite high.”

The Frogs got off 26 shots of their own but were unable to get one in the back of the net.

In the first half, the team came out ready to play, recording 12 shots on goal. Michelle Slater set up Grace Collins and Maddy Warren, who both had good looks on goal but did not find the back of the net.

With time running out in the first half, Yazmeen Ryan ripped a shot that appeared crisp, but it was saved just before it hit the goal line.

“I thought the level was quite high. They did the things that we asked them to do. We created a lot of chances and unfortunately, we weren’t able to finish them,” Bell said.

Throughout the second half, the Horned Frogs controlled a lot of the play. Alvarado made a huge save in the early minutes and Ryan had another good look, but the shot hit the post.

Ryan finished with six shots (two on goal) in the game.

Olivia Hasler and Warren both had looked in the first minute of the first overtime, but still, nothing would go. In the second overtime, Gracie Brian took a shot from inside the 18 but was blocked by a Baylor defender.

In the end, TCU out shot Baylor 26-9 and had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.

“I’m happy with our group. They battled and they fought. This is a tough place to play,” Bell said. “Traditionally we haven’t played well here, but we came out tonight. We were out on our front foot for most of the game.”

Collins led the team with eight shots, three of which were on goal.

TCU will start their home schedule this Friday, Sept. 18 against the Texas Longhorns. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
