Reports: TCU is the leading candidate for the Big 12

TCU may be the leading contender for a spot in the revamped Big 12, according to Dallas/Fort Worth based radio station 105.3 “The Fan. ”

The station announced earlier Thursday evening that they had spoken to an official from TCU Athletics, who confirmed that the Horned Frogs were the main contender for a Big 12 spot.

Presidents of the current Big 12 schools held in a conference call at 5 p.m. tonight  to discuss possible expansion. Orangebloods.com, a site that reports on University of Texas sports and the Big 12 also cited TCU as a possible No. 10 in the reformed conference.

However,  a “leading college official with working knowledge of the situation” who requested anonymity said that “Texas does not want TCU because TCU gives the Big 12 nothing they don’t already have, and sharing money with a school that adds no value makes no sense,” according to a 9:26 p.m. Thursday report in the New Jersey Star Ledger. No one in the UT Athletics Department was available to comment.

Director of Athletics Media Relations Mark Cohen did not immediately return calls for comment.
