Tennis duo wins USTA/ITA championship

A duo that mixed old and new, sophomore transfer Millie Nichols and junior Olivia Smith were a force to be reckoned with at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship hosted by TCU.

The pair aced through the competition over the weekend and capped off their success with a championship match win over Texas A&M University’s No. 2-seeded team of Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Sun Wen on Tuesday.

And they did it in comeback fashion, overcoming a 3-1 deficit and defeating the Aggie tandem, 8-5.

Nichols and Smith’s comeback win mirrored that of their road to the championship match as it came against a lower seed.

The No. 6-seeded team of Nichols and Smith overcame both a No. 4-seed from the University of Texas and a No. 1-seed from SMU, as well as other opponents, to earn a spot in Tuesday’s championship.

Head coach Dave Borelli said before Tuesday’s match that he was proud of his team’s progress over the weekend.

“I’m very happy with where we’re at as a team,” he said Monday. “Doubles is going to be very important for us and we’re showing that we have a lot of depth.”

The win will send Smith and Nichols to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which will take place Nov. 3-6 in Flushing, NY.

It will also improve the pair to 7-1 during the fall as doubles partners. Their only loss came in the season-opening Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas.
