NCAA rifle qualifier begins at home

The TCU women’s rifle team will host the NCAA qualifiers this weekend after wrapping up regular season play with a 4695-4618 win over Air Force on Thursday.

TCU will face Air Force again on Saturday for the second straight match and the third time this season in the qualifier. The Horned Frogs have won 30 matches in a row.

Head coach Karen Monez said the team had a great season. She said the team was focused on getting the job done this weekend against Air Force, not the challenges it could face.

“We’re actually ranked No. 1 going into the qualifier, so there’s a lot of confidence in what we can accomplish this weekend,” she said.

Junior Sarah Beard said shooting at home will give the Frogs a sense of comfort. They practiced there all season and know the range well.

“So it’s a help as far as we’re not going to some strange range where we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Beard said. “We’re definitely comfortable here. We’ve shot a lot of good scores on this range.”

Monez said she wanted everyone on the team to do her best. They should have the mindset to shoot their average score, which will get the job done, she said.

Beard and junior Sarah Scherer are expected to lead the team in scoring, but anyone is capable of shooting a top score, she said.

Scherer said the biggest challenge of the qualifiers will be the pressure to perform.

“We’re pretty set for qualifying, but even with that there are still NCAA qualifiers you still need to perform well,” she said. “So just the pressure, I think, is the only challenge ’cause when you get up there and shoot, you think, ‘OK, every single shot you need to make the best because it’s for the team.’”

Beard said the qualifiers will be a good warmup for the team before the NCAA championships.
