New, local Trader Joe’s store excites students

When Vanessa Miller moved from California to Fort Worth to teach psychology at TCU, she thought she would have to give up one of her favorite stores, Trader Joe’s.

But the grocery store chain planned to open a store with foods and beverages from the exotic to the basic on Hulen Street sometime in the spring, according to a company press release.

Trader Joe’s offered not only a good variety of healthy food but also good tasting food, Miller said.

“Since I moved here I started shopping at Sprouts, which is down the street, and I like them a lot, but I am very excited about Trader Joe’s,” she said. “I think there are still some things I can’t get at Sprouts, like a lot of the Trader Joe’s brand foods.”

Miller admitted she loved many of the items offered at Trader Joe’s, including some food only offered at the grocery store.

Trader Joe’s had more than 1000 items under the Trader Joe’s private label, in addition to specially purchased items, according to a press release.

And unlike other grocery store chains, Trader Joe’s often introduced new items each week, according to the press release. So shoppers would not have the same grocery items each time, but rather, they could try something new.

Miller has noticed that.

“They always change their variety,” Miller said.“I am always seeing new things there. They usually keep what they have, but also introduce new things, whereas the time that I have been at Sprouts, I haven’t seen any introduction of new things.”

Shauna McGillivray, an assistant professor of biology, also planned to shop at the new Trader Joe’s. She often went there for specialty items that she could not find at other stores when she also lived in California.

“They have some unique products, that you just do not find other places,” she said. “It is always a fun grocery store to shop in.”

The Fort Worth store will be located at 2701 South Hulen Street. According to their website, the store will open June 15.
