Iowa State beats TCU 37-23

The TCU football team saw their final drive of the game end in an interception at the Cyclone two-yard line losing their Big 12 home opener 37-23 to Iowa State.

TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin went 23-of-40 for 270 yards and one touchdown in his first collegiate start. He also threw three interceptions in Amon G. Carter Stadium. Jared Barnett threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns in the win for Iowa State. The Frogs fall to 4-1 while the Cyclones improve to 4-1.

Here are some highlights from the game:

Cyclone Defense steps up late
The Frogs cut the Cyclone lead to 30-23 on a Jaden Oberkrom field goal and were looking to drive again at the TCU 21-yard line with just under eight minutes left. Iowa State defensive end David Irving stopped the drive by blocking a Boykin pass and taking it 21 yards for a score. The score extended the Cyclone lead to 37-23.

Quick Start for Iowa State
Iowa State came out on fire in the first half taking just over one minute to get on the board. Quarterback Jared Barnett hit wide receiver Josh Lenz for a 51-yard touchdown strike with 13:48 left in the first quarter. The Cyclones tacked on an Edwin Arceo field goal to take a 10-0 lead. TCU answered with a touchdown pass from Trevone Boykin to Andre Dean, but the Cyclones only needed 43 seconds to find the end zone again. Lenz broke free for a 74-yard touchdown reception with 1:07 left in the first quarter.

Second half starts the same for Cyclones
Iowa State needed just two minutes to add to their halftime lead. After a three-and-out by TCU, the Cyclones drove 80 yards in eight plays to extend their lead to thirteen. The two-yard touchdown toss went to Lenz for his third score of the game. The Frogs used a 31-yard pass from Boykin to Josh Boyce to set up TCU at the Cyclone one-yard line. Fullback Laderice Sanders punched it in to cut the lead back to six. A reverse pass play from Lenz to tight end Ernst Brun extended the Cyclone lead to 30-20 with 13:33 left in the game.

Turnovers, turnovers and more turnovers
The Frogs had three turnovers in the first half including another red zone fumble. The Frogs were set up outside the red zone at the Cyclone 21 when running back B.J. Catalon found a hole to the three-yard line. Defensive back Jeremy Reeves forced the fumble for Iowa State. Catalon fumbled again at the Iowa State 37 with 7:12 left in the half. The fumble was No. 10 on the season for the Frogs. Boykin’s first pass of the game was an interception that turned into three points for the Cyclones. Boykin was picked off again with 7:51 left in the game on the blocked pass by Irving.

Jaden Oberkrom hits 50-yard field goal
TCU kicker Jaden Oberkrom nailed a 50-yard field goal with 2:36 left in third to cut the lead to 23-20. It was the longest made field goal for TCU since Ross Evans hit a 50 yarder against New Mexico in 2008. Oberkrom also hit 38 and 39-yard field goals.
