Sorority shows sense of community through a week of giving

Dozens of rings, bracelets and earrings covered the tables as sorority members, friends and faculty came together to purchase jewelry for a worthy cause.

Sigma Kappa raised hundreds of dollars last week selling the jewelry at three trunk shows in the chapter room of the sorority’s house. The event was part of the sorority’s annual Week of Giving.

Sigma Kappa’s Week of Giving is dedicated to community service and the promotion of philanthropy, senior business marketing major Erin Feller said. It is a way to give back locally and globally, she said.

“Week of Giving is a campaign to promote our Sigma Kappa Foundation and the causes we stand for,” Feller said. “It also promotes other opportunities to give back to the community that each chapter is in and nationally for our philanthropies."

This year, the women of Sigma Kappa partnered up with Show The Love, a company that sells handcrafted jewelry made from recycled and eco-friendly materials.

Each piece of jewelry has an empowering message on it, which sophomore strategic communication major Kayla Emmerson said is used to inspire women. “Girl Power” necklaces and “Infinity” bracelets were among the pieces sold on camps.

Emmerson said that 20 percent of the proceeds went to Sigma Kappa and five percent went to Water.org. The non-profit organization strives to make it easier for people in underdeveloped countries to get clean water.

Other activities during the week included delivering Thanksgiving baskets to elderly residents at Garden Terrace, holding a Fort Worth Independent School District school drive and sending flowers to Sigma Kappa alumni, senior economics major and Sigma Kappa President Remley Johnson said.

The Week of Giving is a nation-wide Sigma Kappa philanthropic event. The sorority has participated in the Week of Giving since it was established at TCU in 1998, Emmerson said.

Johnson said the Week of Giving always happens during the week of or the week following Sigma Kappa Founder’s Day, which is Nov. 9.
