TCU Student Media sends journalists to national SPJ news competitions

Image Magazine and four TCU Student Media journalists received four regional first place 2012 Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists Saturday.

TCU student journalists won 11 reporting awards from Region 8, which encompasses Texas and Oklahoma, and one student who transferred to TCU from Tarrant County Community College shared an award won by her community college.

The journalists and Image Magazine will compete against the winners from 11 other groups for top national MOE honors. The first-place winners will vie for the national MOE award and two national finalists awards.

Image Magazine won the top honor for best student magazine, and Ryan Osborne, who was selected as the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association's Divison 1 reporter of the year, won first place in both the SPJ sports writing and sports column categories.

Other first place winners included Madison Pelletier and Landon Haaf in the television breaking news reporting and J.D. Moore in television feature photography.

TCU Student Media winners also included Bailey McGowan and Lexy Cruz for second place in general news reporting. Haaf won second and third place in television sports photography, Joey McReynolds won second place in television feature photography, Osborne won third place for non-fiction magazine writing, Cruz won third place in breaking news reporting and Bethany Peterson, a transfer student, shared the third place award for editorial writing.

The awards were announced at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention in Fort Worth and were based on news content produced in 2012.
