Medical Examiner: Pickens died from heroin overdose

Medical Examiner: Pickens died from heroin overdose

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled that a TCU student who died on Jan. 29 suffered an accidental heroin overdose.

The ruling comes nearly three months after Ty Pickens was found unresponsive at a friend’s apartment. Pickens was soon transported to Baylor All Saints Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Brennan Rodriguez, a former TCU student, was charged with tampering with evidence following Pickens’ death.

According to a sworn affidavit filed by Fort Worth Police in March, Andrew Tittle, Rodriguez’s cousin and a former student, said Rodriguez hid evidence before the police searched the apartment and brought it back after the police left.

Rodriguez was set to appear in court March 26, but was excused. It is unclear when he will appear in court, as the prosecuting attorney is still investigating the case.

According to Melody McDonald, the public information officer with the Tarrant County district attorney's office, the DA's office has 6 months to present a case to a grand jury. It is then up to the grand jury whether or not to indict Rodriguez.

McDonald also said additional charges against Rodriguez are a possibility as the investigation continues.
