Rec Center extends outdoor volleyball court hours

The University Recreation Center is leaving the lights on longer so students can play sand volleyball well into the night.

Thanks to a request from the Student Government Association the two courts are lit until 10:30 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on the weekend.

“This particular issue was really just as easy as hearing from a group of students about how this was something they desired, asking around for more support and approaching those in charge of the decision,” Student Body President Cody Westphal said.

An agreement between SGA and Associate Director of Campus Recreation Facilities Jay Iorizzo put the extended hours into effect almost immediately, Westphal said.

The courts are behind Milton Daniel Hall, but the change does not seem to have had a negative impact on residents.

Julia Mirich, a first-year political science major, said the lights shining do not bother her.

In fact, she said the extended hours have had a positive impact.

“I have noticed that there are usually always people outside Milton playing,” she said.

Emily Burns, a first-year kinesiology major, said she does not find the extended hours for the lights to be problematic and has not noticed excessive noise.
